Selling on Amazon Marketplace: Frequently Asked Questions
You can sell just about anything online, from dog toys to quirky T-shirts. But how does it all work? Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about selling with Amazon.
Preparation for cross-border newbies
How long do newbies across borders need to set aside to set up a store?
You need to set aside sufficient time for data preparation, registration, qualification review (identity review, video verification, address verification), and due to the special policies of some sites, you will also need to spend additional time supplementing relevant materials. Before completing all verification and officially opening a store, you also need some time and effort to choose the right logistics plan, learn to create high-quality listings, and register a brand to take an efficient first step. Therefore, it is recommended that all sellers try to set aside 1 month to prepare materials and 1-2 months to prepare to open a store. The sooner you start preparing to open a store, the better!
What materials do newbies need to prepare to open a store?
We usually need to prepare “5 big pieces”
(1) A color scan of the company's business license: must be issued by mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan;
(2) A color scan of the legal representative's ID card: The name matches the name of the legal representative of the business license and the name on the registered Amazon account;

(5) Accurate and up-to-date contact information: Contact person's email address, phone number; company address, contact number.

Expand globally
How many sites can I open with one registration now?How is the monthly fee charged?
For new sellers, you can open 18 major sites with one registration, namely North America (US; Canada), Latin America (Mexico; Brazil), Europe (UK; Germany; France; Italy; Spain; Sweden; Netherlands; Poland; Belgium; Ireland), Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE; the registration process is simple and efficient. Under a global account, you can enjoy a preferential monthly fee policy. The total amount is not more than 39.99 US dollars. In addition, we also have an Indian website. Seller friends can register separately for the India website as needed (different email addresses are required), and after registration is complete, they can also connect to an account to enjoy the monthly fee discount.
Which site is better for newbies to choose?
Amazon has opened 19 overseas sites for Chinese sellers. Each site has its own advantages. You can choose the site that suits you according to your supply chain advantages, industrial belt advantages, or interest preferences:
- Many sellers choose the North American site as their first stop because the North American site covers the two major sites in the US and Canada and has a population of 370 million+, and the North American site has a perfect system, mature operation, and many consumers.
- The European site is also the first choice for many new sellers, because of the top 10 e-commerce markets in the world, 8 are European countries. Amazon Europe includes 10 major sites (English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Belgium, and Ireland). With or without interconnection between sites, you can efficiently manage the business of multiple sites.
- Due to the advantage of being close to home with few things, many sellers choose to embark on a cross-border trip at the Japan station.
- Sites such as Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and India are full of “money”, have a young population, and strong spending capacity. It is a rare new blue ocean for cross-border e-commerce!
-Latin America, Mexico, and Brazil have a population of 340 million+, with sufficient demographic dividends and high potential for e-commerce growth. Many North American sellers have taken the lead in expanding their business and have eaten the “first crab”!

I often hear about European VAT, but what exactly is it?When do I need to register for European VAT?
European Value Added Tax (VAT) is a type of tax levied on consumer spending. It is collected by VAT-registered sellers for their sales within Europe and paid to national tax authorities through VAT returns.
Cross-border e-commerce sellers are required to register for VAT under the following circumstances:
Whether your business license is registered in China or overseas, you are required to comply with the requirements of government tax authorities to fulfill your VAT obligations.
Since the implementation of the withholding and payment policy in July 2021, when you use Amazon Logistics (FBA) services, or store products in overseas warehouses in Europe, or sell products to business buyers, or conduct cross-border transactions in the EU, or sales exceed a certain threshold, it will trigger VAT registration obligations.
These are not exhaustive of the common situations that trigger VAT obligations; Amazon recommends that you contact your tax advisor to learn more about VAT obligations in each country where you sell products.

What kind of merchants and products is Multi-Channel Fulfilment suitable for?
Multi-channel delivery provides merchants with the opportunity to use the Amazon Logistics delivery service to deliver to other sites, so that customers who are not on the Amazon site can also enjoy the same delivery experience as shopping on Amazon, and can help sellers operating multiple sites enhance their customer experience and expand sales. In addition, unified inventory also makes it easier for sellers to manage the supply chain more effectively. Multi-channel delivery is suitable both for sellers who already operate multiple sites and for sellers who want to expand more sales channels. Can you provide more detailed FBA packing and labeling guidelines?
Doing a good job of packing and labeling products is a key step in ensuring the smooth entry of products into the warehouse. First, when packaging a single item, it is necessary to properly package the product as required, ensure the airtightness, strength, and safety of the package, and attach the necessary warning labels. Special packaging treatment is required for special products such as packaged products, liquids, and powders.
Second, when packing, the size of the carton must not exceed the standard, and oversized items must be placed on the tray. It is recommended to use the double-layer tray carton stacking method recommended by Amazon to ensure that the boxes are tidy and orderly, and that the heavier boxes are on the lower layer. Do not use packing straps or large staples to bind cartons. Overweight cartons must be labeled as specified.
Again, make sure that the item's barcode is attached correctly. Use manufacturer barcodes first, use Amazon barcodes if they don't have manufacturer barcodes, and leave enough blank space for them. When labeling, avoid sticking to the edge or curve of the box to ensure that the barcode is clear and scannable.
Finally, be sure to upload accurate box content information on Seller Central, including product description, box size and weight, etc., so that Amazon can plan receipt in advance and speed up inbound processing. Adhering to the above specifications will help the goods be stored smoothly and avoid unnecessary delays and cost increases.
How does Amazon handle returns? What is the process and are there any precautions?
The Amazon returns process and considerations are summarized below:
- To request a return, log in to your Amazon account, select the item to be returned on the order page, fill in the reason for the return and other required information, and submit the request. Amazon will provide a return address and tracking number.
- Package the product. Keep the item and all accessories organized, and use the original packaging as much as possible. If it's lost, another protective package will need to be replaced. Attach the shipping label provided by Amazon to the outside of the package.
- Return the item Make your own arrangements to send the packaged item back to Amazon. Free returns require an Amazon carrier, and additional shipping charges will apply if you choose another shipping method. Remember to save the tracking number after shipping to track the location of the shipment.
- Waiting for a refund Amazon will inspect the return once it has been received. If you comply with the return policy, the original amount will be refunded to your payment account within about 1-2 weeks. The results of the inspection will also be notified by email.
Note:
• Carefully review the item's specific return policy for details such as whether it can be returned and the return window period.
• Ensure that the return is requested and shipped within the validity period. Many items only have a 15-30 day return period.
• Be sure to pack the returned item in perfect condition to avoid further damage during transit.
• If it is a virtual item such as a gift card, the refund can be completed directly through the website, and there is no need to send it back in person.
• Be patient and wait for the refund to arrive; once you receive the Amazon refund slip, you have successfully returned the item.

Selection
What products are better to choose to sell? What are some things to keep in mind?
First, it is recommended that everyone take into account the situation in their own supply chain and find opportunities in categories they are relatively familiar with and have advantages, such as those with export experience in target sales countries, cost advantages, etc.
Second, understand the competitive products in the target category. For example, the easiest way for novice sellers is to see what products and brands are in the target category, and what are the characteristics, price ranges, and star ratings of the products. Further, go to the product page to understand the needs of users and what are the advantages and disadvantages of the product in the eyes of users through user reviews, so as to further determine the product pricing direction they want to make, and what characteristics and differentiation they need to have to meet user needs.
Finally, you also need to understand operational and compliance issues related to product selection. For example, oversized products will have higher logistics requirements and require the cooperation of overseas warehouses. Seasonal products present certain challenges to inventory planning and the pace of replenishment. If you miss a time point, you will miss the entire sales season. These are also things that need to be considered during the product selection phase to help later products perform better.
At the same time, we recommend sellers who haven't registered to open a store, sellers who are currently registering, or novice sellers who have trouble selecting products. If you lack tools and data support in the early stages, and don't have product selection ideas, want to get product selection inspiration you can learn from? Also, do you want to verify the viability of the intended category at an early stage? For the first time, Amazon released “Analyzing Front Office Data: Amazon Product Selection Guide”. The official guide takes you to the front desk list, interprets product selection information, and teaches you practical methods to determine category opportunities and your level of competitiveness.

What official product selection tools are recommended?
Amazon has launched two major product selection tools, the “Business Opportunity Detector” and the “Product Selection Compass”. Using Amazon big data analysis and artificial intelligence algorithms, it helps sellers find unmet needs from a consumer perspective, and provides sellers with corresponding dynamic product category analysis and product selection needs in target sales countries. Sellers who meet the usage requirements can check the Seller Central home page card or menu bar to find the tool. Amazon also has a detailed, continuously updated guide to popular products to help you understand the needs and concerns of consumers in different countries.
Where can I find the supply?Which platform do you pick up the goods from? Can I open a store without supplies?
You can choose to find the right reliable suppliers to distribute your existing products. This is a common way for new sellers on Amazon to acquire products. Not only is it cost-effective, but it's also relatively easy to get started. You can also work directly with manufacturers to produce products which can give you more potential for growth, but this is also a challenging approach for new sellers.
90 days of gold for new sellers
Please tell me how to calculate the new product period (90 days for gold)?Does it count from when the store is successfully registered, or does it start after listing?
A new account is calculated within 90 days from when sellable inventory is listed (FBA sellers calculate from the time the product is placed in stock and calculated from the time the shipping seller lists sellable inventory), which is called “90 days of new seller gold”. According to the data, new sellers who have launched and used Amazon series of tools (such as Amazon Logistics FBA, brand registration, Amazon advertising, coupons, etc.) have performed better in these 90 days.
