Cross-border selling guide for beginners
If you’re looking into whether cross-border e-commerce is worth getting into, whether there are still considerable profits to be made, and how much you may need to invest upfront, this may help!
It’s true that starting a cross-border e-commerce business requires considering many factors, but it is not insurmountably difficult. Many popular top sellers also started as small stores selling only one or two products, gradually growing into Chinese brands that now light up the world. As long as you want to do it, it’s not too late to start now. You can refer to the following six steps for getting started in cross-border e-commerce to help broaden your thinking, clarify your direction, and smoothly begin your cross-border journey.
Step 1: determine your business direction: what product will you sell?
Before you officially open your store, you first need to think through and determine your business direction. Who are your products for, and what kind of products will you sell? This will help you make decisions quickly, efficiently, and with high quality. Here are some common issues you need to consider and resolve:
Understand your target audience’s pain points and needs
No matter how creative an idea or product may be, it could fail without consumer support. So you first need to consider: Who is your audience?
For example, if you want to produce high-quality kitchen tools, people who enjoy cooking may become your loyal customers; if you want to sell thicker, more durable yoga mats, yoga practitioners and instructors may be your biggest supporters. Once you've identified your audience, you need to think about what these target audiences think of existing products. What are their pain points? We suggest starting with yourself, putting yourself in the buyer’s shoes, thinking about what interests you, and then judging what kinds of products people with the same interests and hobbies might need. At the same time, you can also learn what the people around you want, what they think is lacking in the products they currently use, and then find solutions that can help them.
Understand the current market conditions for your target product and what opportunities are available
When it comes to cross-border selling, enthusiasm alone does not necessarily lead to success. As they say, 70% depends on product selection and 30% on operations, so you need to determine what the market conditions are for your product and whether it is popular. You can go to the Amazon Selection Guidance to learn the steps and methods for product selection, review Amazon’s official selection tools, and the compliance policies to keep in mind when selecting products. This can help beginner sellers in cross-border selling assess a niche market’s size, growth trends, and competitiveness, find the right niche for their business, and identify new products to source.

Helpful tips
Product opportunities vary by country and by niche market, and Amazon has also compiled official selection guides that provide in-depth analysis of bestselling, high-demand, and high-growth-potential categories overseas.
Step 2: Determine whether your business has value: is there a market for your product?
A good product will always stand the test of time and the market. The more time you invest in verifying the product, the greater the chance of success. After deciding what to sell and who to sell to, you need to start researching how similar products perform, to see whether your product has a market and room for profit.
Talk to potential buyers to learn whether your product has an established audience base
The easiest way to find out whether your product or business has support and a potential audience is to talk to other people. Find out whether the product you want to sell addresses your target audience’s existing needs and pain points, whether they are willing to pay to solve those pain points, and how much they are willing to pay?Or, this pain point may not actually matter much to them. However, be careful not to mention your products, as this may affect the objectivity of the answers you get. Clarifying these questions can help you determine whether your product may have an audience.

Identify what sets your product apart, and offer a competitive solution
As you talk with your target audience, you may find that your product or idea is already on the market. Don’t worry—this actually means the product has market potential and could be a good business opportunity. Also, you can organize buyer reviews of existing products, identify your competitors’ shortcomings, and analyze the complaints about these products to find room for improvement, offer the same products at more competitive prices, or provide better alternatives to create more sales opportunities for your product.

Tip
When considering product selection, these are the three key questions to focus on: what makes a good product to sell? What products are difficult to sell? How can you avoid restricted, non-compliant products?
Step 3: start your sourcing plan: how do you make or source products?
Once you’ve decided what to sell, who to sell it to, and whether the product has a market and can be profitable, you need to start thinking about where to manufacture it or source it.Good products will help your cross-border e-commerce business thrive. The key is not only choosing the right products, but also choosing reliable product sources. Here are two suggested ways to source products:
Distribute existing products through a distributor
Distribution is a common way for new sellers on Amazon to source products, because it can help save costs and is relatively easy to get started with. You only need to contact the right suppliers, order the products, and have them shipped to your business or storage location. Finding the right and reliable suppliers and establishing long-term relationships with them can not only reduce procurement costs, but also ensure a stable supply chain for your future business.
Work with manufacturers
Working directly with manufacturers to produce products gives you more potential for growth, but it's also a challenging approach for new sellers. Because finding the right manufacturer, working with them to produce products that meet your specifications, and ultimately completing your first order require time to build alignment and capital. But in the long run, you'll have the potential to create a unique brand that will help you stand out from the competition.
Pro Tip: registering your brand on Amazon can help you gain brand and product exposure opportunities that other sellers don't have, helping your new store grow quickly, drive traffic, and generate orders.

Step 4: Cross-border e-commerce channel strategy: choose where to sell
There are many channels for cross-border e-commerce, and choosing the right channel to start your cross-border e-commerce business can often help you achieve more with less effort. You can build a website and run an online store on your own domain, sell products on e-commerce websites such as Amazon, or choose to use both channels at the same time.
Build your own website: set up your own domain and e-commerce website
If you choose to build your own website, you can get traffic through search engine optimization, social media marketing, or online advertising, but it takes time and resources. Also, after you receive an order, you still need to spend time processing the order and handling logistics and shipping, which is a challenge for new sellers.

E-commerce channels: Start selling on existing e-commerce websites
Choosing an existing e-commerce website that already has traffic can help you start your cross-border e-commerce business faster and more smoothly. E-commerce websites have extensive resources to help beginner sellers, and selling products on existing websites can also help you avoid the risk of spending too much time and money on products before building a loyal customer base, because established e-commerce websites usually have some brand recognition or market awareness and also offer activities that help drive traffic for sellers.
As a powerful e-commerce channel, Amazon has more than 100 million customers worldwide, and many buyers prefer to search for products on Amazon first. Therefore, choosing Amazon as a sales channel can increase the visibility of the product to a certain extent. In addition, Amazon’s extensive, comprehensive tools can help new sellers precisely reach end customers while staying focused on product innovation, expanding their visibility and influence.
By opening a store on Amazon, you can enjoy:

Rich learning resources
You can use “Seller University” (free tutorials available 24/7) to learn how to run your Amazon business and succeed.
Step 5: preparation before opening your store: what do you need to prepare?
After deciding what products to sell, who to sell to, and which sales channels to use based on your initial research and planning, you can start preparing the materials needed to open your store and planning your costs and time.
Prepare your documents
Before you start registering an account, be sure you understand the relevant document requirements so you can complete account registration smoothly. The following registration information must be provided. If the information is incomplete or false, registration cannot be completed. We recommend that you apply for certification with the relevant authorities as soon as you have confirmed your company name and legal representative.
Color scan of the legal representative's ID card
● The name on the ID card must match the name of the legal representative on the business license
● The name on the ID must exactly match the name on the registered Amazon account
*Please note that these materials must be issued by Mainland China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan.
A valid credit card that can be used for international payments
● VISA or MasterCard
Accurate and up-to-date contact information
● Contact person’s email address
● Contact phone number (we recommend entering the legal representative’s phone number)
● Company address and contact phone number
Bank account for receiving payments
● You can choose: a domestic bank account, a third-party compliance service provider, or a bank account in an overseas market or Hong Kong
Cost planning
After you have all the required materials ready, you can understand the basic components of the costs of opening a store and price your products more effectively to optimize your sales profit margins and support long-term growth. To start a cross-border e-commerce business, you need to consider:
● Product cost: approximately 20%–30%.
● Referral Fee: roughly 8–15%.
● Store subscription fee: we recommend choosing “One-Click Global Registration,” so for $39.99/month, you can launch in 13 marketplaces.
● Logistics and tariff costs: including first-mile logistics costs, storage costs, last-mile logistics costs, import customs clearance and tax payments, destination-country consumption tax, etc., accounting for about 15–20%.
● Advertising and marketing costs: about 10–15%.

Timeline
In addition, you need to set aside enough time to prepare your documents, complete your registration, and undergo qualification review (identity verification, video verification, and address verification), and because of special policies in some marketplaces, you will also need to spend extra time providing additional materials. Before completing all verifications and officially opening your store, you also need to spend some time and effort selecting the right fulfillment solution, learning how to create high-quality Listing content, and completing brand registration to take an efficient first step. We recommend that sellers set aside 1 month to prepare materials and 1–2 months to get ready to start selling. The earlier you start preparing to sell on Amazon, the better!

Step 6: Daily operations after opening your store: how to efficiently get orders?
Congratulations—you’ve already taken a big step toward success, and next you’ll need to start learning how to run your store efficiently. When you sell on Amazon, you can focus most of your time and energy on your products and building your brand, without spending too much energy dealing with small operational issues.
In addition, a new seller’s actions during the first 90 days of a new account are a key period that determines the account’s future performance, known as the Golden 90 Days*. Data shows that new sellers who make scientific use of Amazon’s powerful operational support system during these 90 days perform better: the time to get their first order is 1 month faster than for other sellers; their annual store sales are about 10 times those of other sellers**; and their second-year store sales are about 15 times those of other sellers**. Only by building a strong foundation early on can you lay the groundwork for creating bestselling products and gaining traffic later.
Amazon has also put together an operations guide for new sellers on how to reasonably plan their time and efficiently use tools during a new account’s Golden 90 Days to drive traffic and boost best-selling products. Sellers can control their operating pace based on their actual situation, complete the recommended process within the three recommended time periods, and unlock the corresponding benefit policies to receive up to $150,000 in sales rebates, helping you reduce costs, improve efficiency, and grow quickly.

Determine which Amazon marketplace you are about to expand into

Choose products that are right for your target marketplace
Before you officially start selling, you need to determine who the main target customer for your product is, what advantages your product and supply chain resources have, whether your product aligns with the characteristics of the marketplace, and whether your product meets local compliance requirements for products that can be sold:
Sellable categories: Amazon has opened more than 20 categories to sellers, and selling products in these categories does not require prior approval from Amazon. However, selling products in certain specific categories requires prior approval from Amazon, and only sellers enrolled in the Professional selling plan can sell products in these categories. See details about sellable categories in North America marketplace, Europe marketplace, and Japan marketplace, as well as the Prohibited and Restricted Products policy.
In addition to understanding these policies, we recommend that you start exploring and using Amazon’s official selection tools to help you make better product selections.
Official Selection Guide: Please go to Amazon Official Selection Guide to learn about bestselling, high-demand products and trends for potential products. Amazon also has official product selection tools: Product Opportunity Explorer and Marketplace Product Guidance, which help you assess the size, growth trends, and competitiveness of niche markets, find niche markets that fit your business, and discover new products to sell.

How to pass the review successfully

Identity review
Please follow the instructions to correctly submit identity verification documents, such as the legal representative’s ID and the company’s business license, and wait for the review.
Video verification
There are currently two methods for video call verification: “instant video call” and “scheduled video call.” If you choose a scheduled video interview time, please carefully review the relevant instructions and documentation requirements and complete your appointment. You will receive an email with more details within 24 hours. If the scheduled time for your video verification is incorrect, you can cancel or change your appointment.
Address verification
When entering the company address, enter the actual business address in Chinese, including the street number, and make sure it is an accurate address that can be located. The address cannot be changed after it is confirmed. Once everything is confirmed, you will receive a postcard containing the address verification code mailed by Amazon within 5-8 business days. After you receive the postcard, please enter the verification code on the postcard in the address verification field as soon as possible.
If you haven’t received the postcard after seven days, you can click Resend. You have three chances to apply in total, so please do not apply frequently.
Additional documents and account review
Due to special policies for some marketplaces, you also need to provide additional supporting materials to support subsequent operations. The additional information and verification you may need to provide mainly include:
North American marketplace tax information review
The U.S. tax information review is a self-service review process, and you need to go to Amazon Seller Central to provide taxpayer identification information and update your bank account information.
Europe marketplace KYC review
If you choose to sell or continue selling in Europe and receive sales proceeds, you need to understand the details of seller identity verification (Know Your Customer, KYC), as well as the required materials and steps, in advance.
Account review
In order to provide buyers and sellers with a trustworthy marketplace, Amazon may suspend some sellers' accounts and request more information. If your account is deactivated, you can go to “Seller Central” -> “Performance” -> “Performance Notifications” to find the detailed reason, and prepare the corresponding materials to appeal as required and reactivate your account.
Getting ready after registration
Upload products and improve Listing
As an Amazon Global Selling seller, the product detail page (Listing) is the most intuitive way to display your products and the most effective way for buyers to fully understand them. Amazon will provide new sellers with a detailed overview of product detail pages (Listings), briefly explaining why product detail pages (Listings) need to be standardized in accordance with regulations and how to use them to improve conversion rates. You can take the Seller Encyclopedia course "Basics of Uploading Product Listings" for detailed learning.
To improve your Listing creation and optimization skills, you can also enroll in the official Training Academy online course “Detail Page Creation and Optimization”, designed specifically for beginners.
Prepare logistics for shipping
Fulfillment quality is key to customer satisfaction and sales. Fast, high-quality delivery services not only help sellers seize business opportunities, but also save them time and effort so they can focus on product sales and promotion.
If you choose Amazon-fulfilled products as your cross-border logistics solution, you will be involved in three stages: first-mile logistics (Amazon Global Logistics Service (AGL)), inventory management, and last-mile delivery ((Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA))). Amazon has corresponding solutions for all three stages of cross-border logistics to help you solve cross-border transportation challenges and reduce the operational pressure of cross-border logistics. You can spend more time and energy on selection and optimizing product detail pages, without spending extra effort on packing and shipping or worrying about logistics issues, so you can focus on higher-value work.

Register your brand to build your brand image
For new stores that are just getting started, registering a brand on Amazon can help you gain brand and product exposure opportunities that other sellers do not have. It can not only give customers confidence and help new sellers get through the initial cold-start phase, but also give you access to 30+ comprehensive brand-building and protection tools from Amazon to help protect you from the hassle of counterfeit and piggyback listings, help your new store scale up quickly and drive traffic and orders, and further expand your brand advantage.
Perfect Launch playbook
What is the Perfect Launch playbook
I just completed my registration. How do I get started managing my account next?Is there guidance for new sellers?
Yes, the Perfect Launch playbook for new sellers can help new accounts start getting orders quickly. Here are the details:
The 90 days from when a new account first has sellable inventory listed for sale (for sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), this is counted from when products are received and listed; for Self Ship sellers, this is counted from when sellable inventory is first listed for sale) is called the “Perfect Launch playbook”. Data shows that new sellers who activate and use Amazon services and tools during these 90 days, such as Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), Brand Registry, Amazon Advertising, and coupons, perform even better:

The time to first sale is 1 month faster* than for other sellers

Annual store sales are about 10 times* those of other sellers

The store's second-year sales were about 15 times* those of other sellers
Recommended timeline for the Perfect Launch playbook

Stage 1 of the Perfect Launch playbook: build your foundation
I understand. Do I need to activate FBA, ads, and coupons all at once?
You can divide the 90 days into three stages and enable each Amazon tool one by one for better results! The first stage is: building a foundation—a solid foundation is very important!
The month after completing account registration is a very critical period for building a strong foundation; during this stage, build a solid foundation in these three basics—Brand Registry, listing creation, and fulfillment settings—to lay the groundwork for creating bestselling products and gaining traffic later.

Complete brand registration
When you sell products on Amazon, enrolling in Brand Registry, or “brand filing,” can help with brand protection, brand marketing, and brand data analysis, and help you build your cross-border brand presence! Therefore, new sellers should complete Brand Registry in the first phase to benefit as early as possible!

Use Fulfillment by Amazon
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), the full name of FBA, refers to a one-stop service in which, after sellers send products in bulk to Amazon fulfillment centers, Amazon is responsible for storage, order picking, packaging, fulfillment, and after-sales support (such as buyer inquiries and returns). Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) has major advantages, including reaching Amazon Prime members, 1-Day and Two-Day delivery services, winning the Buy Box, and 24/7 professional customer service.

Complete, test, and optimize Listing
Listing is a standalone product detail page that displays all product information, including:
Product name, brand name, image, Bullet Points, product description, search keywords, EBC/A+ page, and browse locations. Complete and robust Listing content can significantly increase traffic and improve conversion. Therefore: As one of the three core skills, new sellers especially need to master the relevant content for completing and optimizing Listing to lay the groundwork for building successful products later.

Phase 2 of the Perfect Launch playbook: Plan the big picture
I understand. The first stage is to ship products and get them listed, and prepare your brand in advance, so when do I start advertising?
That’s right—the next step is the second stage: use advertising to drive traffic and plan the overall strategy; only by taking a broad view can you achieve twice the result with half the effort!
After your brand is successfully registered, you gain sellers’ trust. After you use FBA, your products will achieve higher customer satisfaction. Once your listing is optimized, it will help convert advertising traffic, so now you can start thinking about how to get more traffic!Choosing Amazon Advertising is one of the more efficient ways to drive traffic.

Why choose Amazon Advertising?

Know consumers better
Amazon has a special connection with Amazon consumers, and this connection helps sellers connect with a more active audience.

More relevant information
Amazon’s products can help sellers show highly relevant information to the right audience at the right time.

More intuitive data
Amazon’s data can provide important insights to help sellers plan and optimize their marketing strategies, so they can achieve desired results.
Three basic search advertising tools

Sponsored Display (Sponsored Products)
Increase the visibility of individual products through ads displayed in shopping results to help inspire customers to make a purchase and increase sales.

Sponsored Brands (Sponsored Brands)
Help customers discover and follow your brand by showing ads that appear in shopping search results and include your trademark, custom headline, and products.

Sponsored Display
Reach consumers on and off Amazon based on their interests with display ads that are easy to create and manage.
Phase 3 of the Perfect Launch playbook: showcase your strengths
There are so many tools available to help with our day-to-day operations, so what do we need to do in the final stage?
The third stage is where you show what you can do. With the first two stages completed, you’ll already have built a certain sales foundation, and you’ll have the opportunity to receive promotion recommendations.
At this stage, you can start considering promotional tools such as coupons (Coupons) and Deals to further improve conversion and continuously drive sales. At the same time, use brand protection tools to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Use Amazon coupon (Coupons)
Amazon Coupons (Coupons) create discounts for individual products or groups of products, have a low barrier to setup, and offer display in dedicated traffic entry points, making them a great choice for attracting traffic and saving costs, so they are especially suitable for new products or sellers who are just getting started.

Use Amazon Deals
Products with strong performance may qualify for Amazon Deal promotions and participate in promotions such as Lightning Deals, 7-day Deal, and Best Deals to quickly increase sales, further improve conversion, and continue driving sales.

Use brand protection tools
Once your brand starts gaining recognition, you need to begin protecting your brand rights, put an end to counterfeit products and listing hijacking, help consumers buy with confidence, and keep your sales more stable.
