I've heard that these listing variant violations are bothering countless Amazon sellers. Variation violations will not only cause listings to be forcibly split and products to be suddenly removed from the shelves, but in severe cases, they will also affect the security of the entire account.
This Amazon article helps you fully understand variant rules, establish an early warning mechanism, and master problem solutions.
What is a variant
A variation (also known as a parent ASIN/child ASIN relationship) is a group of products related to each other. This relationship allows products that are similar but have different characteristics to be presented to buyers in an organized manner.
Parent ASIN: “General Catalog” equivalent to a product line
· Only displayed in search results
· Includes characteristics common to all child ASINs
· Not purchasable
· Virtual, for display purposes only
Sub-ASIN: the specific product that can actually be sold
· Must belong to the same brand
· Must be the same product
· There are differences only in the allowed variant attributes (such as color, size)
For example: different sizes and colors of the same t-shirt
Parent ASIN: ABC brand cotton t-shirt
Sub-ASIN 1: ABC Brand Cotton Tee - White
Sub-ASIN 2: ABC Brand Cotton Tee - Black
By properly setting up variation relationships, not only can buyers get a better shopping experience, but sellers can also increase product visibility and sales effectiveness, and facilitate centralized management of reviews. However, creating an incorrect variation theme may cause the product to be removed from the shelves and affect sales. Therefore, understanding Amazon's variation policies to ensure the accuracy and compliance of variation relationships is critical.
Six guidelines for variant creation
Note:
When a seller creates a variation relationship, according to the different product types and category segments, Amazon will design variation attributes for the seller to match the product in that category (as shown in the figure below), and sellers can select the variation theme that best matches their ASIN.
How to create the right variation relationships
A proper variation relationship usually includes three aspects: the product title, product image, and variation theme.
Product title
Correct variant relationships:
The parent ASIN and child ASIN must be of the same brand, and use proper formatting and sorting to differentiate between different child ASIN variation types, provided they have the same title.
Test it!Have you got a handle on the title's variation policy!
Question 1: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Parent ASIN: ABC Household Goodies Modern Simple Drinking Cups
Sub-ASIN1: ABC Home Furnishing Modern Simple Drinking Cup, 330ML Red
Sub-ASIN2: ABC Home Furnishing Modern Simple Drinking Cup, 350ML Black

Answer: Correct
Analysis:
🔸 Use the same brand (ABC) for all ASINs
🔸 Maintains the consistency of the main title (modern minimalist drinking glass)
🔸 Variant information is clearly sorted by volume (330ML/350ML) and color (red/black)
Question 2: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Parent ASIN: New Summer 2025 T-Shirts
Sub-ASIN: Summer 2025 New Round Neck T Shirt Medium Black

Answer: Wrong
Analysis:
🔸 Parent ASIN and child ASIN have different names
🔸 The title format is inconsistent: “Summer 2025 New T-shirts” vs “Summer 2025 New Crew-neck T-shirts”
🔸 Confusing arrangement: years are in different positions
🔸 Inconsistent descriptive terms: new vs new
Question 3: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Parent ASIN: Household Goodies Modern Simple Drinking Cups
Sub-ASIN1: Household goodies, modern and simple drinking cup, red, glass material
Sub-ASIN2: Household goodies, modern and simple drinking cup, black, thermos mug
Sub-ASIN3: Household Goodies Modern Simple Drinking Cups, Blue, Stainless Steel Drinking Cups with Straws

Answer: Wrong
Analysis:
The characteristics of sub-ASIN products do not fall under the category of “variation types” (there are other differences in addition to the selected variation type, for example, the variation type is color, but there are still differences in material and specifications or other obvious characteristics, so they should not be created together).
Because different materials and functions appear in the product description for this sub-ASIN1, 2, and 3, they are different products.
Question 4: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Parent ASIN: New Straight Wig for Women
Sub-ASIN1: Women's New Straight Wig, Black 1 20cm
Sub-ASIN2: Women's New Straight Wig, Black 2 20cm

Answer: Wrong
Analysis:
When describing colors, even if the colors are similar, Black 1, Black 2, and Black 3 cannot be used to replace differences in color; detailed descriptions of colors are required. For example: Black, Dark Grey, etc.
Question 5: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Parent ASIN: Birthday Party Balloon Set (Pack of 100) 30cm
Sub-ASIN: Birthday Party Balloon Set (Pack of 50) 40cm

Answer: Wrong
Analysis:
Quantity and dimensions should not be added to the parent ASIN; the parent ASIN is virtual and will not be displayed on the detail page. Including the price and quantity in the parent product title causes errors and may cause your product to disappear from the catalog.
Product picture
The main image of the child ASIN is basically the same
For several child ASINs under the same parent ASIN, the main product image is basically the same except for variation attributes.
Example 1: Child ASIN1, child ASIN2, and child ASIN3 have the same image (especially the main image), only the color difference (variant type-color), so they can be listed in the same variant relationship.
The main image of the sub-ASIN is quite different
The main images for several child ASINs under the same parent ASIN are quite different.
Example 1: Child ASIN1 and child ASIN2 have the same image (especially the main image). The main image of child ASIN3 is not the same as child ASIN1 and 2, so the seller needs to update the main image of child ASIN3 to be listed together.
Product Type
Correct variant relationships:
Correct variation relationships: The child ASIN and parent ASIN must be the same product type only if the variation type is different
Incorrect variation relationships: The parent ASIN and child ASIN are not essentially the same product except for variation attributes.
Let's test it out and see if you understand it:
Question 1: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Same women's baseball cap in different colors only
Answer: Correct
Question 2: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Hand cream with different scents
Answer: Correct
Question 3: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Same sneakers in different sizes and colors
Answer: Correct
Question 4: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Shampoo and conditioner from the same brand and with the same scent
Answer: Wrong
Analysis:
Shampoo and conditioner are two different product types, and even though they taste the same as tea tree, they are not the same product, so they cannot be listed together.
Question 5: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Long sleeve and short sleeve t-shirts from the same brand
Answer: Wrong
Analysis:
Short-sleeved T-shirts and long-sleeved T-shirts are two different types of products, and even if they are made by the same manufacturer or brand, etc., they cannot be listed together.
Question 6: Is this parent-child ASIN title compliant?
Soup bowls and plates in the same color of the same brand
Answer: Wrong
Analysis:
The seller is selling a soup bowl set, and the title of the item is 8 Pieces Bowl Set (8 Piece Soup Bowl Set). Even if the dinner plate is the same color, it should not be listed in the same variant as the soup bowl set.
How to resolve variant violations
When a seller has a variation violation, the seller may currently have the following two different experiences depending on the severity of the issue 👇
Variations created by the seller were split due to a violation, but were not notified of the removal of the ASIN or the suspension of the store
Under these circumstances, sellers are not required to file any complaints at this time. However, please refer to the solutions below to avoid further violations in the future.
RESOLUTION:
🔹 Find the root cause of the split
🔹 For sub-ASINs that have been split, form the correct variant or sell as a single item
🔹 Find the root cause, check if the rest of the variant links have similar issues, and make changes ahead of time
🔹 There is usually no need to file a complaint
Variations have been split, ASINs are unsellable, and the account status page has a violation record and appeal button
This situation requires the seller to file their own appeal. The specific appeal method is as follows 👇
🔹 Review performance notifications to understand the root cause of variant violations
🔹 If there is an actual violation, the offending variant needs to be corrected (restructured with the correct variant or sold as a single item) before filing a complaint
🔹 If you think there may be a misjudgment, further explanation will be provided on the complaint page
🔹 Check if the rest of the variants have similar issues and make changes ahead of time
Frequently asked questions and answers
Will my account be suspended if I violate variants multiple times?

A: If your account is alerted of variation violations more times than Amazon allows within a certain time frame, then your account may be at risk of being suspended due to repeated violations.
What impact do price differences between products in the same variation group have, and can they be created in the same variation relationship?

A: According to the concept of variation, different child products under the same parent product should be similar, so there should be no big difference in pricing. Also, if the price difference is too large, it may cause confusion among consumers, which affects purchasing decisions.
Can products with low reviews be created by merging products with high reviews through the creation of variation relationships. Are there any risks?

A: Amazon requires that product reviews accurately reflect the true quality of the product. Merging unrelated product reviews misleads consumers and harms the shopping experience. This violates Amazon's policies and is considered a policy violation.
How can I get help when I have issues with variants?

A: Please refer to the image below to find the most effective help resources depending on the type of issue.
